Geçmişte açık cerrahi ile tedavi edilen böbrek taşları son yıllarda gelişen teknoloji paralel olarak Perkütan nefrolitotomi (PCNL), Retrograd İntrarenal cerrahi (RIRS) yada vücut dışından şok dalgaları ile taş kırma (ESWL) tedavisi gibi birçok alternatif metodla tedavi edilmektedir.
Yeni nesil fleksibl üreteroskopların ve holmium lazer gibi etkin ve güvenli taş kırıcıların geliştirilmesi ile Retrograd İntrarenal cerrahi (RIRS) taş tedavisinde önemli bir alternatif haline gelmiştir. Günümüzde açık cerrahiye, perkütan nefrolitotomiye (PCNL) gereksinim duyulmadan Retrograd İntrarenal cerrahi (RIRS) ile başarılı bir şekilde tedavi edilmektedir.

What Is RIRS?
RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is a minimally invasive endoscopic technique for removing kidney stones. A flexible digital ureteroscope is introduced through the urethra and bladder, advanced up the ureter, and into the renal collecting system — reaching the stone entirely through the body's natural passages without any incision.
The Procedure
Once the stone is identified, a holmium laser fibre is advanced through the working channel of the flexible ureteroscope. The laser pulverises the stone into tiny fragments that can either be retrieved with a basket device or left to pass spontaneously in the urine over the following days.

After the Procedure
A temporary ureteral stent (DJ stent) is typically placed at the time of surgery to allow drainage and healing. It is removed in clinic 1–2 weeks later under local anaesthesia. CT or plain X-ray at 4–6 weeks confirms stone-free status.
